Aprés Ski at Smaller Lake Tahoe Resorts

Aprés Ski at Smaller Lake Tahoe Resorts
Big decks for snow bunnies and a fairytale retreat

This trio of Lake Tahoe resorts may not nab all the headlines, but they quietly deliver some appealing options when it comes to après ski. Here are highlights.

SIERRA-AT-TAHOE

This smaller resort on Lake Tahoe’s southwest side, home mountain for a fleet of gold-medal-winning skiers and boarders, invites you to relax in Solstice Plaza, a 30,000-square-foot/2,787-square-meter deck for a relaxed après ski.

HOMEWOOD

Challenge your kids to a game of Scrabble or Monopoly in the cozy Fireplace Pub in the base lodge at this West Shore resort. While you’re waiting for your turn in the game, warm up by the massive wood-burning stove, then check out the classic images culled from Homewood’s history (it opened over half a century ago).

ALPINE MEADOWS

Save some energy on the slopes for this astounding nighttime event—a guided snowshoe trek under the stars to the ultimate mountain retreat, The Chalet at Alpine Meadows. It feels like you’ve wandered into a fairy tale at this magical mid-mountain lodge on Tahoe’s north side. You and your fellow diners, cheeks flushed from the cold and the exercise, gather at tables for hearty, Alps-inspired dishes such as Sierra Nevada Porter potato cheese soup, prime rib, chicken cordon bleu and apple strudel. The Snowshoe Dinners, offered on peak weekends and holidays, are limited to 50 guests, so reservations are essential.

Snow-covered peaks in winter, gushing waterfalls in spring, wildflower meadows and glistening lakes in summer, vibrant colours in fall—this is a land of dramatic and wild beauty. World-class mountain resorts circling turquoise-blue Lake Tahoe, and at Mammoth Lakes cater to all, with scenic ski trails in winter and trails and vistas in summer.

Yosemite Valley…is always a sunrise, a glitter of green and gold and wonder in a vast edifice of stone and space.”  --photographer Ansel Adams

Yosemite National Park, a World Heritage Site, is here, roughly 3½ hours east of San Francisco. Whether you hike a mountain, ski the steeps, or lounge in a hot tub beneath a canopy of stars, you’ll find your perfect getaway.

As it lay there with the shadows of the mountains brilliantly photographed upon its still surface, I thought it must surely be the fairest picture the whole earth affords.
Mark Twain (recalling his first sighting of Lake Tahoe)
July - August

With a pine-and-peak alpine setting and a relaxed and friendly ambiance, this appealing event in Bear Valley, roughly halfway between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, includes performances by outstanding musical artists. Launched in 1967, the festival features a full symphony orchestra, international soloists, and legendary entertainers at pretty outdoor venues. Classical works, opera, Broadway show tunes, and opening weekend acts of contemporary and country music are offered, with past guest artists ranging from the Mamas and the Papas, to Big Bad Voodoo Daddies.
