OCTOBER

California Avocado Festival

The first avocado trees in California were planted around 1871, and now the state grows a whopping 90 percent of the crop harvested in the U.S. So it makes sense that one of the state’s top growing regions, Santa Barbara County, draws 100,000 fans to sample guacamole, salad, soups, and countless other concoctions all featuring this beloved fruit (yes, it is a fruit not a vegetable). Signature events include the World Champion of Guacamole contest and largest avocado weight competitions (they sometimes reach more than four pounds, 1/3rd of a stone). To keep things hopping, the festival includes more than 70 musical acts on four stages.
